How to Calculate the Grade You Need on Your Final
Enter your current grade, the grade you want to finish with, and how much the final exam is worth. The calculator uses the standard weighted-average formula used by most US high schools and colleges:
Required final score = (Target grade − Current grade × (1 − Final weight)) ÷ Final weight
Example: you have an 85% in the class, you want a 90%, and the final is worth 20%. You need (90 − 85 × 0.80) ÷ 0.20 = 110% — so a 90 is out of reach, an 88 needs a perfect 100%, and an 87 needs 95%.
Frequently Asked Questions
What if the result is over 100%?
It means you cannot reach that target with the final alone, unless your teacher offers extra credit. Try a lower target grade to see what is realistic.
What if my final is worth a number of points instead of a percentage?
Divide the final's points by the total points in the course. A 200-point final in a 1,000-point class is worth 20%.
Does this work for weighted categories?
Yes. Use your current weighted grade as shown in your school portal, then enter the final exam's category weight from your syllabus.
What is the minimum score to pass?
Set your target grade to your school's passing mark (usually 60% or 70%) to see the lowest final exam score you need.
